About

The Carolina Photojournalism Workshop was founded in 2004. Each year a group of multimedia students travel to a unique part of our state to produce a documentary website in a week. Over the years the workshop has become an indispensable learning experience for our students. There are no distractions; students work from dawn to dusk everyday, pushing themselves and their colleagues to become better journalists. Students work closely with some of the finest professionals in the industry, staying up late into the evening performing nightly edits. In our 7 days in Wilmington, found some truly special stories – of survival and of hope, caring and family.

Past workshops have won awards from the Webby Awards, National Press Photographer’s Association, College Photographer of the Year, Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, Horizon Interactive Awards, South by Southwest Interactive and the Society for News Design.

We’d like to thank all the people in our stories for allowing us into their lives for one special week. Also thanks to the coaches that devoted themselves to helping us every step of the way.

SPECIAL THANKS: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication, UNC-Chapel Hill Institute for the Environment, Tony Reevy Senior Associate Director and Lecturer, UNC Institute for the Environment, and Calin Gunn, Graduate Assistant.
