Driving Force

By Carolyn Van Houten As bubbly as Ashlie Rowe seems when you first meet her, the second she pulls on her skates her identity changes. She becomes Snuff Film Starlet, a tough, loud roller girl. She has to be fast and sneaky since she is so much smaller than the other women who play this physical sport. She said that she has “become 75% Snuff Film Starlet and 25% Ashlie Rowe,” explaining that roller derby has been a personal and physical transformation rather than merely a sport. With eight Pomeranians and two jobs, the time commitment to the team has been really difficult to fulfill, but that has not stopped her from taking up a leadership position in the league. Last year she suffered a severe concussion while playing derby. She ended up with a post concussive disorder and was unable to play for months, thus losing her hard-earned spot on the competitive Cape Fear Roller Girls team. Throughout the next few months she worked her way back onto the team, by proving that she had come back an even better player than ever before.
