Home Break

By Andrew Mackenzie

Wrightsville Beach, NC is known to be a great East Coast Surf town. There is a great culture surrounding the surf community and a great core of surfers made up of locals from both Wrightsville and Wilmington. Many of these surfers have chosen to stay near the coast in order to be able to surf more frequently. Often times they might be giving up higher paying jobs for those few great days of surf a year.

Eliot Garner was born and raised in Wilmington and has been surfing in Wrightsville since age five. He attended UNC-Wilmington and began working at Outer Banks Hammocks as a freshman in college. Since that time the twenty-five year old native has become the manager and essentially runs the Hammock business. He surfs whenever there are waves and is in charge of a number of Hammock Weavers including Mason Hawfield. Mason will be a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill this coming fall. During the past two summers he has been weaving hammocks with Elliot and surfing as much as possible. The two young surfers personify the Wrightsville surf scene.
