Treading Water

By Michelle Tessier

Meeting his wife and having children changed Bret Carlson from a hard-partying fisherman into a loving father. While his wife stayed home with the kids, he spent days at a time offshore as a commercial fisherman, and picked up work as a boat captain when the fishing industry began to decline.

Then suddenly, his wife died from a heart and lung disease at age 50. Adrift in his own grief and confusion, Bret must now take on his wife’s responsibilities in addition to his own and take care of his kids, who are dealing with the pain of losing their mother.
