Tricks and Landing

By Julyssa Sosa

A growing popularity of skateboarding in Wilmington has led to a community of skaters in the area. The skaters range in age, race and style as they come together in skate parks or on the street. In addition to the active effort of providing skate parks, local skate shops provide opportunity for many of the kids through a sponsorship. The skating community provides a safe haven for most of these kids as they’re free to skate without judgment or stereotyping.

Austin Yu, 15, is has been skating for about three and a half years. After picking up a board for the first time, skating just “hit” him. Instantly, his determination showed as he began being sponsored by local shops. Austin emphasizes the importance of these parks for bonding and as a refuge. With the continued support, he hopes to try make it professionally, but is satisfied with just having skateboarding a part of his life.
