The Magic of Marshall
Produced by Amelie Fawson
How do you become solid again after experiencing the liquefying uncertainty of disaster?
Baylen Levore found belonging in the small mountain town of Marshall, North Carolina.
But her sense of home was shattered when Hurricane Helene devastated the French Broad River Valley. What began as a storm warning became a devastating reality as Baylen witnessed Marshall’s destruction firsthand. The French Broad River became a raging torrent, causing historic flooding and claiming lives.
“I can’t describe the devastation that Marshall was in,” Baylen said.
Baylen’s former studio, housed in an old classroom within Marshall’s historic high school, once served as her creative sanctuary. Now the building lies damaged and tilted, gutted and covered in plastic sheeting.
The familiar spaces that once provided Baylen comfort have become unrecognizable. In the wake of the flood, Baylen finds new belonging through her family, a rekindling of her love for tattooing, and a ragtag, quirky baseball team.
