Carving a Connection

By Matherly Collins

“When I can have an instrument in somebody’s hands that allows them to be themselves, then… that’s pretty awesome.”

Kate Rickenbacker is a master violin maker and restorer in Black Mountain, NC. She works with local musicians as well as players as far away as Alaska, helping them to play to the highest potential of their instruments, talents, and individual personalities. With a sharp ear and skilled hand, she crafts and re-crafts instruments until they truly sing.

For Kate, music is about more than just making a beautiful sound. It is a connection between people, a worldview that values presence in each moment and care as one moves through an ever-changing world. She teaches these values to her son Aiden, who has been in the shop with her since he was a baby, and who has not missed a day of violin practice in four years.
