Where the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers meet, towns large and small are at a crossroads.

Rich in art, history, and culture, this area has long been at the heart of Appalachian life for centuries, but a growing tourist industry and Asheville’s booming economy have brought sweeping changes to the region. From buskers to blacksmiths, pickleball to Black Wall Street, ecovillages to breweries, how are folks making a home where rivers meet?

Where the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers meet,

deep in the Blue Ridge mountains, towns large and small are at a crossroads. Rich in art, history, and culture, this area has been at the heart of Appalachian life for centuries, but a growing tourist industry and Asheville’s booming economy have brought sweeping changes to the area.
