In a small mountain town in a school of only 450 students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, Coach Butch Smart has earned much love and respect among students, faculty and the town of Highlands, NC. “Coach” as everyone refers to him, teaches courses in Math and P.E., and coaches the Highlands High School basketball and golf teams. Four years ago Coach had a bout with cancer, causing the community to rally around his wife Judy, the school’s secretary, and daughter Stephanie, a fifth grader at the school. Today Coach joins his family and community in giving thanks for being alive.
