Nestled in the foothills of the Smokies, Highlands, North Carolina was established in 1875 as a mountain resort town. The town sits at an elevation of 4118 feet, making it the highest incorporated town East of the Mississippi River. Like many small southern towns, Highland’s Main St runs through the middle of the city and serves as the business, social, and religious center of town.
