Half a century ago, Haywood County was a vibrant farming community. After the postwar influx of paper mills and factories to the area, the number of these farms significantly decreased. Yet some still thrive, like the Muse family, and pass on the traditions and passions for cattle to the next generation. Jessica Muse, an 18-year old high school senior, is an active member of the Haywood County 4-H Livestock Club. She also works part time at a dairy farm in Clyde, NC and shows cattle once a month through 4-H with her younger sister Michaela, an activity in which the girls’ parents are very supportive. Jessica plans to attend NC State in the fall on the path to pursuing a masters or doctorate in livestock research and nutrition. Jessica’s disciplined life now lays the path for her contribution to American food and nutrition in the future.
“Grooming is an art in itself. Its like sculpture—it takes a lot of practice!”
